History of Deutsche Messe AG

After World War II, in order to provide industrial development for Germany, the British military government decreed that the Germans were to organize a trade fair from 18 August to 17 Sepetember 1947. For Germany, that was mentally and physically a ruin, the only way to survive was to export its goods.

In 1947, a company was established under the name of "Deutsche Messe und Ausstellungs AG" and it organized the first post-war show "Export Messe Hannover" in five former production halls of the United Light Metal Works Factory. The exhibition lasted for 21 days and had 736.000 visitors from 53 countries, signing 1934 export agreements that left an income of 31.6 million US Dollars. In August 1987 the name of the company was changed as Deutsche Messe AG. The symbol chosen for this event was the profile of Hermes, the God of trade, and today this symbol continues to symbolize Deutsche Messe AG and all its subsidiaries.

The exhibitions held in Leipzig before the war were moved to Hannover in the years after and became the symbols of "Miracles of German Economy". In 1950, the first foreign exhibitors took part in renamed " German Industrial Fair". In 1961 the name "Hannover Messe" was officially adopted and became a world platform for technologic-economic communication.

In 1986 despite the objections of various sectors, telecommunications and IT systems were taken out of Hannover Messe to create "CeBIT", which is today the number one organization of Deutsche Messe AG. Today many leading world-wide exhibitions are being organized in the fairgrounds of Deutsche Messe AG.

Between 1990 and 2000 Deutsche Messe AG made a number of investments in its fairgrounds. Spending an amount of 1.6 billion DM, new halls were added to the present ones serving for the aim of development. In 2001 last hall, number 27, covering 35.000 sqm. area was built.

In 1985 Hannover-Messe International GmbH was established to organize international industrial exhibitions out of Germany. The first German Industrial Fair (AEF) was organized in Turkey. In the years after, 6 subsidiaries of Hannover-Messe Internatioanl GmbH were established in different countries. These subsidiaries located in America, Singapore, Turkey, Hong Kong, Shanghai and San Paolo not only send participators to the fairs in Germany, but organize their own internatioanl exhibitions in their countries as well. Besides the subsidiaries, Hannover Messe-International works with representatives in more than 60 countries all over the world that sell local and international fairs of the company.
